Are you a Game of Thrones lover? If you are then you’re definitely going to want to visit Iceland, the real world location for a number of different places in the show. You’ll be able to relive all of your favorite episodes and even act them out if you’re really feeling adventurous. This beautiful country has a great deal to offer, and even if you’re not a Game of Thrones fan you’re going to have an amazing experience for the entire family.
If you’re looking for the “mountain shaped like an arrowhead” then this is exactly where you want to be. It’s a beautiful mountain that actually features a number of waterfalls nearby and gives you plenty of adventurous ways to enjoy your time. If you’re a hiking fan you’ll have a lot of fun hiking right up the side of the mountain, but it’s definitely not intended for amateurs because this one has a whole lot of difficult areas to it. Not only that but you’ll see fossils in the mountain that make it even more interesting to examine closer (since you’ll need a rest when you get to the top). This is, in fact, the most photographed mountain in the entire country. It’s also the home of beaches, a walking trail and more, all in the western regions of Iceland.
As far as your Game of Thrones fantasies go, this is the mountain that was primarily featured in seasons six and seven. It was an ultimate destination for Jon Snow and his hunters and you’ll get to relieve every aspect of it when you see it for yourself.
If you love the wilder aspects of nature you’re definitely going to love this area that’s actually located on the edge of a lake. It’s near Lake Myvatn and it’s definitely more than just a waterfront destination. Rather, it’s an amazing place to see volcanic formations. That’s definitely going to appease your wild side and it’s going to still show the more tranquil and beautiful aspects of the water and the wilderness as well. Not to mention you’re going to see plenty of trees and woodsy areas. It’s filled with a little bit of everything, but beautiful all around. Walking trails, inlets and more are also common here and you’ll also see plenty of amazing wildlife, especially the birds. Known as one of the most beautiful places in the area, it’s one you’ll want to get some pictures of for yourself.
When it comes to Game of Thrones, this area was the camp of Mance Rayder and his group way back in season three. Not to mention the beautiful area has served as the perfect place for the series to get a little bit of B roll to use throughout the episodes.
Þingvellir National Park
National parks can be quite amazing and this one is definitely no different. It’s a beautiful place that’s full of people in some places (so if you’re a people person you’re going to love that aspect). You’re also going to find an amazing canyon located here and inside of it is a waterfall. If you’re interested in the natural beauty of Iceland you’re not going to find many spots that are better than this one to fully immerse yourself. There’s even a geyser, the Silfra Fissure and a field of lava rocks. It’s a great place for you to try out snorkeling and diving with it’s perfectly clear waters. It’s even one of the best dive sites in the world. Not to mention you’re going to be in a place that’s truly full of history, in every sense of the word.
Of course, for you Game of Thrones fans you’ll recognize this as the Bloody Gate. Back in season four it was the defense from the Vale of Arryn. Of course, the amazing looks of this place are going to really throw you right into the realm of Game of Thrones because it looks like it came right out of one of the stories.
What’s really great about this place is that not a lot of people even know it’s here. That’s going to make it a great way to get some amazing photos, enjoy some beautiful sites and avoid some of the crazy tourists that you’ll find in a number of other areas But you’re still going to get what you came to Iceland for. You’ll have a beautiful waterfall that looks just like it came out of the pages of a fairy tale. And of course, all around it are plenty of beautiful hills and mountains and plains. It’s going to be the perfect place to take a rest, or a picnic or just take a hike. The waters that flow through this waterfall are actually known for the multitude of Atlantic salmon that live there. Even more, it’s really unique to see in the winter because the waterfall actually freezes.
For all you Game of Thrones fans this is the area you’re going to remember from season four, where Daenerys’ dragons stopped in for a roasted goat. It may not have made a huge impression on you then, since it was a quick moment in time, but when you get to see it in person you’re definitely going to see just why it’s one of our favorite places in the entire country.
This valley takes up what is actually quite a large section of Iceland and that means you’re going to have plenty to do while you’re here. You’ll see a farmhouse from way back in the Viking era. You’ll see unique structures and beautiful plains and a whole lot more while you’re at it as well. There’s really going to be a little bit of something for everyone to look at and your little ones are going to love running and climbing throughout the valley. You may just have a problem finding a reason to tear yourself away from everything they have to offer. There’s a waterfall and a gorge and all of it has a beautiful frame of mountains on either side. That’s definitely going to be something you want to look at and something you want to tell everyone about.
Game of Thrones featured this beautiful valley back in season four. It was actually Olly’s village before it was destroyed. So you got to see the beauty and the wonder of this amazing place, but you also got to see it completely torn apart. We’re definitely glad that none of that was real.
Want to see a live volcano? This is where you’re going to want to be in order to do it. You’ll see an amazing site when it comes to this one and you’re going to have a heck of a hike in order to get there too. That’s because this is the perfect place for anyone who’s interested in some outdoorsy time and some adventure. If you travel in the summer you’ll find a lot of people hiking alongside you. If you travel in the winter you’re going to need a large vehicle to get you up the side. Though the best way to travel is going to be heading from here right to the hot springs. What could be better than that? What you won’t see here are any trees, because it’s all about the lava, which makes it nearly impossible for anything else to grow in the area.
Back in season four this area actually had a pretty decent showing. It was actually the location of a stand-off between Brienne of Tarth and The Hound. So if you’ve been wondering just where you could recreate the scene, this is the ideal place (the original place) to do it.
You’ve heard of white sand beaches but you may never have heard of the black sand beaches of Iceland. Well you definitely should have because they are just as amazing (or maybe even more so). They’re also one of the most popular areas in the en
tire country. You’ll see amazing waves crashing up onto shore (this isn’t the place where you want to go into the water). You’ll also be able to really experience the power and the majesty that is this beautiful country. It’s located between Reykjavik and Glacier Lagoon as well, which makes it a convenient place for you to stop in for a little while and just take a look from the shore (a little ways back on the shore). You’ll see the rock arch and cliffs of Dyrhólaey here, as well as plenty of birds that flock through the area in droves. It’s even a great place for puffins.
With a small cameo in season
seven, you saw Reynisfjara as Eastwatch-by-the-sea. It’s the area where Jon Snow and his crew landed before they decided to he
ad further north. It’s also the area where the wall crosses over Westeros.
This is perhaps what you picture most when you think of Iceland because it’s a huge glacier but in a truly unique form. That’s because the glaciers here are almost like needles, sticking up out of the ground. You’ll also see amazing volcanic formations that really make you think of a futuristic or fake world. But these sites are definitely entirely real and they’re going to be easy for you to find as well. They’re right off one of the popular roads and they’re a perfect place to stop in for more than a few pictures. You’re going to have plenty of things to look at and no idea when to leave. An outlet for one of the largest ice caps in Europe, this is one of the most popular in the country as well. In fact, many people flock to the area to be able to hike across a glacier and experience the wonder of it. There are definitely some great views through here.
If you’re wondering about the Game of Thrones reference it’s the fact that this is where the story practically begins. At least, it’s where Ygritte and Jon Snow begin because it’s from way back in season two. The Night Watch managed to catch a Wildling here and it’s even the place where the White Walkers battle took place. So it’s been around.
You’ll find lava rock formations all over Iceland, but the most amazing ones are going to be found here. These are gigantic and there are also plenty of them, which means you’re going to have plenty to look at. It takes a little bit longer for you to get there than some areas. You’ll be driving about 6 hours past Reykjavik, but you’re definitely going to feel like it was worth it when you get a chance to see what’s actually here. People definitely love to come here and it’s about a whole lot more than the folklore. Although, that folklore is definitely going to get you interested in seeing this place for yourself, if you aren’t already. It was entirely formed by an eruption, and if you don’t think that’s going to start some stories then nothing will.
As for Game of Thrones, this area was in season three and served as a Wildling camp. You’ll find that it was an area of cold temperatures, but there wasn’t anything super amazing happening here and there were no dragons or epic fights. It’s possible it slipped your mind, but it won’t when you see it again.
There are plenty of amazing places that you’re going to want to take a closer look at in Iceland. Whether you’re already a Game of Thrones fan or not there’s plenty of experiences that you’re not going to want to miss and you’re definitely going to find some features to show off to every member of your group. Iceland has more than you would think to offer and it’s not all cold and ice. In fact, there’s a whole lot of beautiful plains, beaches and more to offer in Iceland. You’re not even going to have a chance of exploring them all.
