The birthplace of America, Philadelphia definitely has some great things to do, and it’s actually located in a prime spot. It’s almost right in the middle between New York and D.C., which makes it an awesome place to visit on your way to either one of them. What’s really great is that Philadelphia has a whole lot more offer than just historical charm. You’re also going to find a whole lot of culture and some really awesome food options while you’re there.

Scheduling The Time when you visit Philadelphia

So, you’re ready to head to Philly, but you’re not really sure to go, right? You’re actually in luck because there is a whole lot of stuff to do in the area no matter what time of year you decide to travel. Though, of course, if you’re really looking to be immersed in the culture and the great vibe of Philly you’re going to want to check out Philadelphia in the summer. You’ll find festivals, you’ll enjoy walking the town and you’re definitely going to want to check out the zoo and Rittenhouse Square, which are two of the most amazing outdoor spots you’re going to find anywhere.

While you’re heading around you’re probably not going to want to take your car (road tripping it to Philly could be a long drive) but you don’t need to worry about it because there are plenty of other options to choose from. In fact, you can take the SEPTA to get you wherever you want to go. This is Philly’s mass transit system and it actually encompasses a whole lot of options. You’ll have buses, commuter rails, trolleys and rapid transit, which gives you all the choices you could want and will get you everywhere in Philly (and the surrounding area) that you want to go.

Also, I write a post on a Travel guide for Colombia and Top 10 Museums in London

All you need to do is take a look at the website for SEPTA to find out their schedule and you can even get what they call an Independence Pass. The pass will give you access to everything SEPTA has to offer, as many times as you want and all you have to do is pick how many days you want it for. Prices vary based on just how many days you’re going to be using it and you can pick them up whenever you want.

Make sure you’re checking out some of the other great things to do in the Philly area as well. Sightseeing Pass has a whole lot of great places you’re going to want to visit and you’ll be able to get discounts while you’re at it. If you’ve never been to Philadelphia before you’re definitely not going to want to miss out on any of them. It’s going to be up to you to choose the perfect vacation for you, you and your partner, a group of friends or your entire family (children included).

You’re Here … Now What?

You’re going to have plenty to do when it comes to arriving in Philly. After all, the birthplace of our country has to have quite a bit going on, right? Well, you’re going to find more than history. If you’re not big into all that you’ll find sports, culture, art and just a whole lot of fun. What could be better than that? Just take a look at what kind of traveler you are:

For the History Buff, definitely a place you don’t want to miss at Philadelphia

You’re not going to want to miss Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was signed or Liberty Bell Center, where you can see the bell on display. You’re also going to want to check out Betsy Ross’s house, the Rosenbach Museum and plenty of the other historical centers located throughout this amazing city. Things like the Eastern State Penitentiary and Benjamin Franklin Parkway (and the museums you’ll find there), are also going to be a great way to explore the area and really enjoy what it has to offer. You’ll see the Barnes Foundation, The Franklin Institute, The Rodin Museum and The Academy of Natural Sciences.

For the Art Lover

If you absolutely love art and culture you’re going to want to head to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Not only is this museum going to be a great place to see some of the art you love best, but you’re also going to see where part of Rocky was filmed, which is pretty cool too, don’t you think? On top of that, you can see the Academy of Fine Arts, take a stroll down Mural Mile and see plenty of smaller museums and galleries all around. You’re going to have a really great view of the way that history has definitely been made in the form of art within this community. And you’re going to be amazed at just how much of that art is from the community and those that are young to old.

We also have a space for the Sports Fans in Philadelphia

If you want to check out a game while you’re in town you’re going to be more than happy because Philadelphia is home to the Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field, the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park and the 76ers at Wells Fargo Center. You’ll also be able to catch plenty of boxing matches (for anyone who’s still hung up on that Rocky connection). If you’re really into sports you can also check out some smaller, minor league teams that almost always have something going on. It’s going to be a whole lot of fun for you to experience what all of them have to offer, or even just check out the stadiums if there’s no game. You’ll get to at least check out some of the memorabilia and see some of the historic parts of the arena.

For the Relaxation Fanatic. Philadelphia also has a relaxing space for you…

For those who just want to relax and wander through town without all the scheduled stuff you’re definitely going to want to walk all over. You’ll find Boathouse Row to be a quiet and quaint little area to enjoy the water and take a close look at the boathouses throughout the area. You’re also not going to want to miss Reading Terminal Market, which is a great place to check out some great food and some great shopping. It’s a super fun way to explore what the culture has to offer in a more laid back way. Make sure you check out the waterfront with it’s piers and parks as well as the great view of Benjamin Franklin Bridge. You’re going to find a whole lot of people down here as well, if you’re really into the busy scene.

For the Events Lover

For the person who doesn’t want to miss a thing there are plenty of different events going on at any given time in Philadelphia. You’ll find everything from the Israeli Film Festival to Wine Week and a whole lot in between. Basically, anything that you could think of that you might want to celebrate or see you’re going to find something in Philly that lets you really experience it and thrive. What’s even better is that a lot of the events that you’re going to find are completely free, so you can enjoy yourself, experience something new and never even have to pay for anything, what could be better than that?

Never Miss a Meal

You definitely won’t be disappointed when it comes to what you’re going to eat while you’re in Philly because you’re going to have a little bit of everything. Of course, you can’t go too long without having a Philly cheesesteak, but if you’re going to be there more than a day there are other things you’ll want to try out. Check out Chinatown for some of the best Chinese food around and heat to University City for Ethiopian. You can have some of the best food from any part of the country, you just have to know where to look. After all, Philadelphia is a hotspot for a little bit of everything and you’re going to want to try it all.

Make sure you’re not getting caught up in the cheesesteak and forgetting everything else that’s on the menu, and definitely step outside the city center (or Center City) to find some of the places that are off the beaten path. You’re definitely going to find one of your new favorite restaurants if you do, and who knows what type of cuisine could turn out to be your new favorite.

If you’re looking for a great place to have a drink you’re going to find plenty, no matter what kind of drink you prefer

And also you want a cocktail you can check out some of the sleek and stylish, old-fashioned lounges.

If you’re looking for a hip and modern joint you can check out the craft beer scene. You’ll even find international beers if you’re interested in broadening your horizons or you can try out some of the specialty local options. Either way, you’re going to have something great to drink.

A Place to Call Home… Philadelphia is definitely warm

So, what do you do when you’ve spent the entire day eating, drinking and checking out all the amazing sites? You’re going to want a place that you can head back to and relax. After all, you’re going to be spending at least a few days there, hopefully, and you’re going to need a home away from home that will give you the comfort that you want most. What you’re going to find in Philly is that there are plenty of different locations and there are plenty of different styles to each of the places you can stay.

If you’re looking for the history you can find some of the most beautiful old buildings in Rittenhouse Square or Old City. These are going to give you plenty of amazing places to stay in with hotels that are high end and really showcase the old world charm of the city. Of course, you can find a little bit of everything in Center City, which is the downtown area located right near Rittenhouse Square. So if you’re not quite sure what you’re looking for that’s going to be a great place to go, with plenty of options. You’ll find the trendier hotels in Fishtown, which is also near the downtown area.

The Best Way to Arrive

The best way you’re going to get to Philadelphia is either through the airport or the Amtrak. Philadelphia International has planes flying in from just about anywhere in the world, which means you can fly in no matter where you’re coming from and you can fly out just as easily. It’s going to be super simple getting into town once your flight comes in too because the airport is only about 20 minutes away from downtown Philadelphia. That means you don’t have to worry about how to get there.

If you’re going to be coming from a big city in many different parts of the country you can also opt to catch the Amtrak or you could take a Megabus. These actually both have stops located right near downtown. That means you’re already going to be right in the middle of the action and you can start walking wherever you want to go. If you’re coming from some other locations you may also be able to catch a Greyhound, which is also going to drop you off right in the heart of the city.
